Can I Stop Lansoprazole If The Internal Stitches Of Gastric Bypass Surgery Are Healed?

Posted on Mon, 22 Jun 2015
Question: I have had a rash since the day after I began taking Lansaprazole for a gastric bypass. I'm 59 years old, and 6 weeks postop. Are my internal sutures healed so I can stop the Lansaprozole. I was on Prednisone for 10 days and the rash got better but has returned full force. it looks like raised exzema and I have some papules and hives that itch severly.

Brief Answer:
Yes, the junction is healed right now.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

For sure your internal stitches are healed completely. The best proof is that you can eat. If the healing process wont be over, eating would cause the damage.
Your rash seems to be allergic indeed. So you should stop Lansoprazole for sure. It seems to be not necessary at this point.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

They recommend taking it for 3 months to prevent ulcers after the Roux en Y gastric bypass. But you still think it will be safe to stop taking it? And how long do you think it will take the rash to go away once I stop taking the Lansaprazole?

Brief Answer:
You may switch it to Ranitidine.

Detailed Answer:
You may try Ranitidine instead of it. 3 months is a stipulated border. Some will have ulcers a year or few years after the Roux en Y junction, some wont have them ever. So I still think its better to stop Lansoprazole than stimulating allergic reaction.
Steroids by the way are know ulcers factor and could worsen the stomach condition.
So the most reasonable action right now is to switch Lansoprazole to other, different antiacid which Ranitidine is.
