Can Gastrointestinal Parasites Cause Anal Itching?

default
Posted on Thu, 15 Oct 2015
Question: Okay this slightly embarrassing to ask but if a tickling feeling in my butt happens what are the chances it is a tape written or parasite?
I have had other symptoms like weakness and tiredness. Normal weight control I think. But have recently started having more cramps and sharp stomach pain occasionally. Normally constipated but also have ocassional diarrhea. And when I restI start getting a tickling feeling in my anal area and small gas passes to. But I can definitely feel pressure there.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Yes,it is true that gastrointestinal parasites can cause anal itching and other symptoms like abdominal cramps, diarrhea, chronic fatigue etc.
Parasitic infection and not common in adults and there are many other causes for anal itching like hemorrhoids, skin irritation due to friction or frequent bouts of diarrhea ,yeast infections etc.
I would suggest to consult a physician and get examined.A physical examination can exclude hemorrhoids as a cause of your symptoms.
A stool test would confirm or exclude a parasitic infection.
-I would suggest some additional tests like:
-Complete blood count to exclude anemia
-Thyroid function tests.

Hope it helps.
Please feel free to ask for every question you might have.

I am embarrassed to go to a local Dr about it unless I an for sure that it is probably a parasite. I have been checked for thyroid and anemia in the past 10 years or less. I have a child and I also eat lots of meat. I have never felt this feeling or sensationalmost like a muscle spasm but pressure also. I m telling you this so maybe you could tell me if it is likely to be. And do blood tests tell for sure if a parasite is there? And how should I go about taking to a local Dr without them thinking I'm over reacting.?

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

Considering all your symptoms and the fact that you have a child living with you, makes it possible to be a parasitic infection.

A blood test won't detect the parasites.A stool test is necessary for this.
-Complete blood count and thyroid tests are necessary to exclude other possible reasons for your symptoms.
I can understand you are embarrassed to go to your doctor but you shouldn't.As I said a physical examination and the above tests are necessary to find the cause of your symptoms.
There is no reason to think that you are overreacting.

Take care.
