Can STD Be Transmitted Through Contact With A Non Living Surface?

default
Posted on Tue, 25 Nov 2014
Question: hey doctor,
here are the three incidents which i think have put me at a risk of sexually transmitted diseases...
1. I have the bad habit of chewing my lips. And my lips have many cuts on it..all bleeding lightly.
Yesterday i had gone to a famous temple . There is this idol where everyone whispers
their wishes. Almost all the people there touch their lips to the wall ...at the exact same spot.
I did that too. i m worried because i have cuts on my lips. And since thousands of people touch
their lips ...what if someone had any sexually transmitted disease and when i touched my lips on
the wall..the virus and bacterias( of stds)...got on to the cuts on my skin and transmitted some sexually transmitted diseases/infection.AM I AT RISK?

2. Secondly while walking in this crowded place...some sharp object cut my feet...the sharp object punctured my skin and though it did not bleed heavily..it did bleed a little. what if someone with std's
also cut their feet from the same sharp object which is very likely since hundreds of people were walkng there. and what if the sharp object had some blood from someone with stds and when the sharp object cut me ,the infected blood entered my body and gave me std's.
Am i at risk?

3. I also have lots of cuts on my fingers due to bad habit of chewing my fingers. Some days ago i accidently dipped my fingers which have lots of cuts(due to chewing habit) in an unknown shady person's glass of water...what if that person had std's and his saliva is mixed in that water and also maybe he has bleeding gums and maybe a tiny amount of blood is also mixed in the water...MY FINGER ALSO TOUCHED THE EXACT SAME SPOT WHERE THE PERSON'S LIPS ,TONGUE TOUCHED THE GLASS.what if the blood and saliva somehow got into the cuts of my fingers ...could i get an std this way?

For each of the above situation...i want the risk for the following STD's and also others i might be at risk of..
1. Hepatitis C
2. HIV
3. Syphilis
4.Herpes
5.HPV
6.Hepatitis A
7.Hepatitis B.
please let me know the risk for each situation.
I have had hepatitis B vaccine when i was young. i dont know if they are still effective now.
Please let me know if the three incidents are risky.
thank you!

Brief Answer:
No risk of STDs.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
I have gone through your detailed description. STDs are not transmitted by contact through a non living surface like a stone or wall or a glass. Even if these things have earlier come in contact with an infected person still the risk of transmission through a non living surface is zero. A direct contact with the infected tissue fluid or blood is necessary. You are not at any risk of STD. Please do not worry.
Do try to avoid biting lips or fingers to avoid such a situation in future.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.

hOW CAN A SHARP STONE BE ZERO RISK...THE STOEN MUST HAVE DEFINTELY CUT SO MANY PEOPLE BEFORE ME...IT DEFINITELY MUST HAVE BLOOD ON IT...HOW CAN THIS NOT SPREAD STDS( ESPECIALLY HIV AND HEPATITIS C) ALONG WITH OTHERS...THERE WERE TOO MANY PEOPLE...SOMEONE MUST HAVE DEFINITELY CUT THEMSELVES BEFORE ME...PLEASE EXPLAIN!
ALSO ONE MORE QUESTION...IF A PERSON WHO IS HIV POSITIVE/HAS HEPATITIS c...AND HAS ALL THE STDS HPV,HERPES,SYPHYLIS(HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION)..IS PLAYING WITH TALCUM POWDER AND SOME OF THE POWDER GETS ON YOUR SKIN DIRECTLY FROM HIS SKIN (DIRECT CONTACT) AND ALSO INDIRECTLY( THE POWDER ON HIS SKIN FALLS ON THE GROUND AND IS RUBBED AGAINST YOUR SKIN).....CAN ANY STD BE TRANSMITTED IN THIS WAY..THIS IS MY LAST RISK?
1. Hepatitis C
2. HIV
3. Syphilis
4.Herpes
5.HPV
6.Hepatitis A
7.Hepatitis B.

IF YOU UNDERSTOOD THE SITUATION...LET ME KNOW YOU UNDERSTOOD IT ...
AND EVEN IF YOU DONT UNDERSTAND THE SITUATION...LET ME KNOW..I LL EXPLAIN MORE!
PLEASE LET ME KNOW THE RISK?
and if all the above are no risk...can i continue with my life without sexual worries and continue with my sexual life without transmitting anything to my partner?

Brief Answer:
Practically zero risk. Nothing to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Risk of transmitting any disease by pricking of stone is practically zero. A certain amount of blood has to come in direct contact with your blood. When the stone pricked your skin, it was not bleeding.
No STD can be transmitted by skin to skin direct touching or by sharing talcum powder used by another person. Handshaking can cause transmission of bacterial infections like cold and flu but transmission of STDs has not been proven in clinical studies.
You can continue with your normal sexual life without worrying.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Brief Answer:
details below.

Detailed Answer:
I meant to say that the area was not bleeding before the prick. I takes sometime for the blood to ooze out. The blood did not come in direct contact with the blood on the stone. So the risk of transmission is practically zero.

hey doctor,
LAST QUESTION..last risk..please explain !
i m extremely worried that i have been exposed to stds in the following cases. Please let me know the risks.

First of all,i would like to share some details with you.

Age: 22 yrs.

i have taken hepatitis B vaccine when i was a kid.but nothing after that.I m not sure if those hepatitis B vaccine are still effective now at the age of 22.

Incident 1.

I have a habit of chewing my lips.So day before yesterday i cut my lips up so bad that they started bleeding heavily. So i stopped chewing on them.Yesterday at around 12 i again accidently chewed on them and they started bleeding again.

Some fifteen minutes later,i was walking towards a shop when an extremely sick looking person with red eyes waiting to get his medicines in the medical shop spit his saliva and accidently some part of it fell on my lips.

What if this person had bleeding gums which i think is very likely and has stds...his saliva(some little part) fell directly on my lips.

what XXXXXXX the risks of transmitting the following stds:

HIV(extremely worried)

Hepatitis C( extremely worried)

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis A

HPV

HERPES

Syphylis!

please let me know the risk and should i be worried!

i have heard the hep c virus is extremely small and even little drop of bllod and saliva can have millions of viruses in it.

please let me know the risk!

Brief Answer:
Risk is less than 5%.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
A small droplet of saliva from an infected person if it is come in direct contact with your saliva or blood can cause Hepatitis A and C. Transmission of hepatitis B , HIV, HPV and Syphilis do need a direct prolonged contact or a blood to blood contact. Herpes can also be transmitted in this way though the risk is low. The vaccination that you took during the childhood needs to be repeated or a booster dose is need for it to have a protective effect on you.
You can wait for a week and self monitor yourself for any symptoms to appear or contact a physician and get a complete test profile done for STDs to rule out all the possibilities. Though the risk of transmission is less than 5% but still to allay the anxiety you can get he tests done.
Regards.
