Can STD Be Contracted Through Oral Sex And Protected Intercourse?

default
Posted on Fri, 29 Mar 2019
Question: I had a sexual encounter with a woman I performed cunnilingus on her and she gave me head shortly after giving her husband head .... but I used a condom for vaginal penetration ... the day after I was itchy and a couple weeks later got very congested and had a sore throat and right after the sore throat my stomach started to consistently feel nauseous. If I eat I would very quickly get full and have acid reflux which had never been a problem before ... I also have a slightly swollen lymph node under my neck .... been tested once at two weeks and everything was negative . Any clue what this could be

Brief Answer:
Please see the detailed answer below.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

You should know that oral sex is one of the ways that sexually transmitted infections are most frequently passed on. Gonorrhea, chlamydia, genital herpes and syphilis are more commonly caught through oral sex.

I need to know what kind of tests for STI you have done? Please could you send me an attached copy of them?

I hope my answer helps you. Feel free to ask me further.

Brief Answer:
Please see the detailed answer below.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

You should know that you can have a negative result for HSV 1 and 2 after two weeks of exposure because antibodies take time to develop after the first infection. Therefore, you may not have a positive antibody test if you have just recently been infected.

Furthermore, you shouldn't worry about HIV because by having protected vaginal intercourse and oral sex, there is a very low possibility of getting HIV infection.

According to the HIV test, I need to know what kind of test you have done because each test has a different window period. Usually, I would recommend you to do a 4th generation test for HIV because it can take 2 to 6 weeks for your body to make enough antigens and antibodies for a combination test to detect HIV infection.

However, based on your concern, I think you should exclude gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis as well.

I hope my answer helps you. Feel free to ask me further.

When you say exclude do you mean that I should test to rule them out or you wouldn't consider them a possibility at this point..and at almost 7 weeks should I consider any test from this point forward to be accurate? Also I'm not sure if this is a coincidence but I've also had a lot of pimples pop up in random places ... they do actually appear to be pimples and are spread out .. no clusters and they are on my abdomen chest and a few on my face

Brief Answer:
Please see the detailed answer below.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Please can you send me an attached picture of these pimples? When did they appear, was it before or after your risky sexual history?

When I say exclude I mean you should test (for gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis) to rule them out as a possible infection in your case. Gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis test results are accurate after 7 weeks.

In addition to that, testing for HIV after 7 weeks with 4th generation test is accurate. Even for that we usually suggest to do a 4th generation test as a conclusive test after 3 months. However, in your situation, (having protected vaginal intercourse and oral sex) I think testing with 4th generation test after 7 weeks is very accurate.

Accordingly for HSV 1 and 2, it is probably a good idea to wait at least a month or two before even considering getting an HSV 1-2 test after a potential exposure. Even then, you might want to consider getting retested after six months.

I hope my answer helps you. Feel free to ask me further.

Brief Answer:
These elements could be just a skin infection and not STI.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

In the pictures, I think that these elements are not related to an STI but could be just skin infection (acne) maybe from sweat.

I'm gonna do the full test but how accurate are the rapid hiv test at 7 weeks
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Monika Dede (16 hours later)
Brief Answer:
In your situation, rapid test after 7 weeks is very accurate.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Unfortunately, there isn't any scientific data available for the precise accuracy of the Rapid Test at 7 weeks. However, it is known that 95% of infections are detectable by 4-6 weeks, and it has high accuracy after 12 weeks.

Based on guidelines recommendations, usually I suggest a 4th generation test after 3 months in order to received completely definitive results. In your situation, (having protected vaginal intercourse and oral sex) I think testing with 4th generation test after 7 weeks is very accurate.

I hope my answer helps you. Let me know if I can assist you further.

I got the rapid hiv test done yesterday and the first one came back with a very very faint line and the second was negative . Two different manufacturers and the doc said the first type tends to give false positives . Should I be worried ? She also drew blood to send out and she said she only needed a little bit of blood is that correct
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Monika Dede (11 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Yes, this is correct.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Regarding your concern, I think you shouldn't worry because it's quite likely that there is no reason for concern.

It could happen that a rapid test could be false positive but in your situation (protected vaginal intercourse and oral sex) and based on the other result tests, there is no reason for concern. You are likely to be free from HIV.

I hope my answer helps you. Let me know if I can assist you further.

The oral sex was not protected and I'm still waiting for the confirmation that the one rapid test was a false positive and results for the other tests as well . I checked my throats last night because it was sore . It's not completely red but I have one swollen tonsil and both tonsils hurt when I open my mouth to yawn

Brief Answer:
Please see the detailed answer below.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Yes, in the last statement, when I say oral sex, I mean unprotected oral sex. (It could happen that a rapid test could be false positive but in your situation (protected vaginal intercourse and unprotected oral sex) and based on the other result tests, there is no reason for concern. You are likely to be free from HIV.)

Related to your concern and based on your sexual history, I think that you should test for gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and mononucleosis (EBV) infection or could be just a viral situation (viral tonsillitis).

I hope my answer helps you. Let me know if I can assist you further.

And I know those are not spelled correctly. Is that hiv pretty definite if so what percentage would you put to it ? How accurate is the hsv at 7 weeks ?

I also have on tonsil that is swollen and a slightly sore throat and when I yawn it feels like the back of my throat is stretching and sore ?

Hello,

Please don't worry. Based on your history (having protected vaginal intercourse and unprotected oral sex), I think that this situation is not related to HIV.

Related to your concern, I suggest to wait for gonorrhea and chlamydia test results. If they are negative (please show me the results) you should do a cervical ultrasound to define better the swollen lymph nodes and meet an ENT specialist.

Brief Answer:
I suggest to do a testicular and abdominal ultrasound.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Sorry, when I said cervical I mean (cervical head) neck ultrasound to look for lymphadenopathy and to check the size of your lymph node behind your ear.

Related to your recent symptoms, I think you should do an abdominal and testicular ultrasound as well to define the reason better and to look for lymphadenopathy in your inguinal region.

Furthermore I suggest a full blood count, protein C reactive, wright (to exclude brucellosis) and you should take a culture from the lymph node that you got pus in.

I hope my answer helps you. Feel free to ask me further.
