Magnetic resonance imaging is based on nuclear magnetic resonance and employs high strength magnetic fields and radio-frequency radiation.

MRI is similar to CT scan in providing a cross-sectional display of body anatomy with excellent resolution of soft tissue details. It permits identification of soft tissue lesions inaccessible to other imaging techniques. The total avoidance of ionizing radiation, its lack of known hazards, and thepenetration of bone and air with minimal attenuation, makes it particularly attractive as a non invasive technique.

Indications of MRI in gynecology

  • To evaluate spread of vaginal cancer.
  • In cervical ans uterine cancer, to determine its spread into paramettrium and staging of cancer.
  • To diagnose invasive mole.
  • To diagnose sarcoma and sarcomatous change in a fibroid.
  • Ovarian malignancy in which details are not obtained by CT scan.
  • In obstetrics pelvic assessment can be accurately done by MRI. This technology is contraindicated in the first technology is contraindicated in the first trimester of pregnency. The fetal anamolies are accurately detected by MRI.
