What Is The Treatment Of Fever In Children ?

Hi i have a 2 year old with Fever of 38.6 and very cold feet.. She was very sick all last night, throwing up a lot and till nothing left in stomach. Fever only came on this evening, start of the day as 37.0. She has had a cold for about 4 days now, just bad running noise and before that she had a cough (usual over christmas period colds coughs going around) She has moments of feeling ok and playing with toys and then goes all quiet and just wants to cuddle for about an hour then she pots about again. She has been drinking little bits since 11:30am, before that she was just sick 5 mins later. She has only eaten 1 and half rich-tea biscuits and one ice pop, not willing to eat anything else as fever shot up. As fever so high i have given paracetamol, do i need to take her to hospital or continue at home? Thank you Tina

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi Tina,
Welcome to Hcm,
All these symptoms suggests to me that she has got viral fever. She is having a bad viral upper respiratory infection. You are doing good by giving paracetamol round the clock and I must appreciate the work. Best thing is to be patient. Make sure she drinks as much fluid as possible. Even if she doesn't eat solid diet, her hydration should be perfect. Give paracetamol four times a day for 2 days atleast and after that only if she has fever or any pain symptoms. I would suggest you needn't rush to hospital now. All she needs is symptomatic treatment and rest. Of her symptoms persists for another couple days then take her to hospital to get her blood tests done. I hope she improves by then . take care.
