What Is The Recovery Time For Depressive Disorder?

My Step son has been diagnosed with Major Depressive disorder with psychosis. He's been on medication for about 6 years now and has had electro therapy but doesn't seem to be any better. He doesn't work and sits around and plays Xbox all day long. He doesn't care about anything or anyone and seems happy when he's making others unhappy. Shouldn't he be improving by now?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM

He has been diagnosed with major depression and psychosis since last six years and is on medicines. He also had electro convulsive therapy (ECT) sessions and still his symptoms are persisting. As he has psychosis and depression and is not responding to medicines then in such case medicines for resistant psychosis can be used. Medicines like Clozapine have excellent roles in psychotic symptoms that don't respond to conventional drugs. For his depressive symptoms combination of SSRI medicines along with other drugs like sodium valoproate or Lithium carbonate etc can help. These medicines help in resistant symptoms.

Vocational training, controlled employment to keep him busy are other options for his rehabilitation. Consult his psychiatrist for details.

Thanks, hope this helps you. Take Care

Dear
Welcome to HCM
We understand your concerns

I went through your details. Depression is potentially treatable or self-limiting; insight goes faster in depression than in any other illness. Depression is psychological pain, and a severe depressive illness is arguably the most unpleasant disease.

Usually doctors rely on two methods to treat depression. Pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy (specifically interpersonal therapy and cognitive therapy). In pharmacotherapy psychiatrists try with anti-depressants, lithium, Anticonvulsant medication and electro-convulsive therapy. The interpersonal therapy focuses on the immediate social context of the depression and the depressed person's relations with other people. The cognitive therapy focuses on correcting the patient's negative thinking, irrational guilt and pessimism. There are positive evidences of good results and cure. Therefore, work with your psychiatrist for better cure.
