Dietitian & Nutritionist 's  Response
Hello- The doctor who ordered the lab did not treat him? Generally, the first thing that is done with a patient with lipids this high is to initiate statin treatment, the triglycerides need special attention and immediate attention. In your case, pancreatitis needs to be checked for and treated by your doctor if present.

If you were my patient I would begin diet instruction on appropriate calorie levels, portion control, lowering and changing dietary fat, teaching to eliminate trans fat and increase monounsaturated fats. I would discuss research on omega -3 fatty acids and weight if appropriate. I would encourage increasing soluble fiber gradually. I would encourage exercise according to Doctors recommendations.

At this time, I would advise you to call your doctor for an explanation of your lipid values and how HE thinks they should be treated. Then, perhaps with the help of a dietitian, arrange your menu to be heart healthy. Please do not put this off, these are very high values! Best of luck. Always feel free to come back if you need further help. Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
