Questions and answers on "Pancreatitis"

Hi, may I answer your health queries right now ? Please type your query here... My husband had a pancreatitis last October of unknown origin (he does not drink), a severe one with over 3000 lipasa. He also has had for the last few years a PSA somewhat high. A biopsy in 2007 (at 5.95) was negative. Since then the PSA has gone up and down, but after the pancreatitis it went up from 4.6 to almost 6 and three months later to 7.8. The doctor wants to do another biopsy. Could the pancreatitis have had an influence???

My friend has had about 13 pancreatitis attacks and has been hospitalized everything for them. My question is how many pancreatitis attacks can a person have and why do them seem to be happening more frequently now even though she is under the care of a specialist, on a special diet?

doctor1 MD

Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I am Dr. Rommstein, I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can.
In most cases this is caused by small biliary stones or pancreatic stones and he should do ERCP or MRI biligraphy to rule this out. Other causes...

Hi,
I have been hospitalized for pancreatitis. Now my lypase levels are almost double what they should be, even though I have cut down on drinking (no hard alcohol at all), could this be due to my menstral cycle? How does menstration effect the lypase level in my body?

Much thanks,
K

doctor1 MD

HI
Thank for asking to HCM
Numbers of different lipase presented in human body here you must be talking about the pancreatic lipase, which is very likely to increase because of your clinical condition of pancreatitis, it is nothing to take with your menses but may have something related with...

My husband is 47- experienced first pancreatitis 4 years ago. Had gallbladder removed, became diabetic following year. Was able to control with diet until last year. He is now taking Januvia as of last month. He started on mertformin and that actually caused his numbers to rise. He had a flare up that was managed at home in June of this year, and accute attack in August, and another flare that we are managing at home this month. We are seeing a gastro dr, specialist in Dallas, and our local family dr. He's had a biopsy of the pancreas and it was benign for cancer. We are going back for more tests in a few weeks. We are following low fat diet as well. He does not drink or smoke...so far there are no medical answers for the cause of the pancreatitis. In your experience, are we doing all the right things? Would a Mediterranean diet help considering diabetes an pancreatitis?

doctor1 MD

Hi,
Antidiabetic drugs by themselves can cause pancreatitis. Since alcoholism and gall stones are absent then antidiabetic drugs can only be the possible offending agent.

I have been under enormous stress since the beginning of August which continues till today. My specific question which has to do with the pancreas or total endocrine glands is pain which runs from under my upper left shoulder blade around the front extending into the area of the pancreas and sigmoid colon...I'm 73 female have experienced this once before when in my mid thirties when I was under enormous stress...actually had a positive amylase test ....the gi doctor said I couldn't have pancreatitis because I didn't fit the profile!!! My stools have changed to lighter yellow today ...I do take something for anxiety, lexapro 15 milligrams a day and klonipin, 0,05 mgs ....1 1/2 tablet per day. I have been diagnosed with microscopic colotis in 2006 and take donntal 3 tabs per day and 1 entocort per day. The stressors are: my husband has had bladder cancer for 8 years, quite treatable though he may have to have his bladder removed. My daughter-in-law has hurthle cell thyroid cancer for 4 years and now in the past two weeks has been diagnosed with breast cancer. My only son is on his own because after 30 years of marriage is wife left him and my grandson, 29 has become a police officer in an inner city in Connecticut. All that being said I guess I am in remarkably good health...but my paternal grandparent either female or male died of pancreatic cancer , the other of bladder cancer. My maternal side is remarkably healthy.....I have no other known health problems at this time. thanks for any direction you may point me!!!

doctor1 MD
