What Does Rapid Heart Rate Of 89-117 Suggest?

I ve had a rapid heartbeat for a little over a month now. I m currently unemployed and have to go to a community clinic. I ve been to the doctor twice this month. Taking losartan 100mg and the doctor just prescribed iron for anemia. Should I wait a few days for the iron medicine to work or seek other medical attention. (Blood pressure was 160/104 last week. Heartbeat ranging from 89-117. age 45/female)

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello, madame! Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.

Heart beat is a very variable component throughout a day. It goes up after physical activity or psychological stress. These are the physiological causes of increasing of the heart beat. On the other hand, anaemia is a disorder that puts the heart in a hyperdinamic state of action, thus raises the heart rate. My opinion is that, if this anaemia is not of late stages, then the iron supplement will work on increasing the haemoglobin levels and, therefore, the heart rate will decrease to within normal ranges. Also, losartan, given to you for its blood pressure-lowering effect, does not have any effect on the heart rate. If even after iron supplementation and haemoglobin levels normalization, there will not be decreasing of heart rate, I suggest you to consult your cardiologist about the possibility of using blood pressure-lowering agents which act by prolonging the electrical impulse conduction through the atrio-ventricular node and by inhibitory effect on the sinoatrial node, thus decreasing the heart rate. The classes of drugs that posses these properties are most of beta blockers, and verapamil and diltiazem from the calcium channel blockers.

I hope I was helpful with my answer.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
