What causes a black spot on the tongue?

My 93 year old great aunt has multiple cardiac problems and hospice sends their healthcare workers here to care for her. Tonight I noticed a black spot on her tongue. Should I call them or is this something that can wait until morning? Any ideas of what it might be? I know she frequently has anemia but I ve never noticed this before. I feed her so I think I would have noticed. No, she hasn t had anything today that could to eat that could have stained her tongue.

Hi,

It could be hyper-pigmentation from inflammation to anything like melanocytic nevus or melanoma. You should consult your doctor soon.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
