What Does Large Areas Of Hyalinizing Necrosis And Granulomas Indicate?
lung biopsy of nodual. Initial: showing large areas of hyalinizing necrosis and granulomas, no malignancy noted. Special stains results: done with stains for AFB, Pas and GMS performed. no definite fungal organisms identified though very rare cocci sugested for fungi are identified on the pas stain. Clinical correlation is reccommended. What does this mean?
Hello and welcome to HCM, The interpretation of biopsy report is as follows: Presence of necrosis and granulomas suggests presence of chronic granulomatous inflammations. Granulomatous inflammations include tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, fungal infections, berylliosis etc. Special stains are required to identify the causative organism. ZN stain is done for tuberculosis or AFB. PAS stain is done for fungus and PAS stain is showing presence of fungi. Thus, a possibility of fungal infection is suggested. The histopathological examination has to be coupled with clinical assessment for diagnosis.
