What Could Be The Reason For Sudden Swelling, Redness And Discomfort In Fingers?

I woke up yesterday with my index finger all red & slight discomfort of knuckle , but then all day I had no pain or discomfort. Today none either, but now it is swelled a little more & feels somewhat tight in finger & hand ... I just noticed my foot on same side is swollen & I never have trouble with that .

Dermatologist 's  Response

Hi,
I can understand your concern for the sudden swelling, redness and discomfort in fingers.

After reading the query, in my opinion it appears to be two possibilities:

1. Allergic dermatitis: There is sudden redness and itching on contact with a particualr contact allergen.

2. Acrocyanosis: this is due to exposure to cold which causes sudden redness with pain sensation rather than itching.

I suggest you to apply medium potency steroid cream application because are best effective in these condition. I would have opted for either mometasone or Fluticasone or cortisone cream.

Do not pinch, pop or scratch or even touch the area unnecessarily as it can cause aggravation of the rash.

Wear cotton clothes and cotton inner garments which will give a soothing feeling to the skin.

Stay away from extreme of cold environment.

Take care.
