What Could Be The Reason For Spotting After Full Hysterectomy?
My sister had a full hysterectomy 10 years ago and she saw small spotting stain on her underwear the other day - what could this be from if everything was removed? She has a doctor appointment this week and I am very concerned for her. She is a breast cancer survivor. Thank you.
Hello and welcome, I am Dr Madhuri a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist and will be helping you with your queries. I completely understand your concern and share it.
It is not uncommon to have spotting years after a hysterectomy. The cause is usually senile vaginitis or atrophic vaginitis. In this the vaginal lining becomes very thin and friable due to lack of estrogen and then may bleed. This is similar to the bleeding that one gets from dry cracked lips. It is a similar phenomenon.
The other rare causes are vaginal and vaginal vault polyps or cancers. The cancers are very rare. So an examination will reveal the final picture.
Please do not worry as senile changes are far more common than cancer.
