What Causes Uncontrolled Rotten Egg Tasting Burps And Hiccups?

I am a 22 yo/f with a history of Gerd and anxiety. I weigh 285 and am 5'6". For the past three weeks I have been getting the hiccups and then a nasty sulfur/rotten egg like burps that I cannot control. I take Prilosec daily and tums to try to get rid of the burping and uncomfortable feeling in my stomach. Do you think it could be my gallbladder? I am the 4out of 5 f's fat fertile female fair. Should I go to the ER? I am waiting on my appointment to reissue my CICP which won't be for a couple months. The lady in my doctors office said I cannot get in to see my doc without the CICP but I can go to the ER and they can put a rush on my CICP so I can get medical care only from the ER.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Noted the history and understood your concerns. Since you are a known patient of GERD and anxiety these should be under good control for success of any further management. The hiccoughs can be due to the following reasons: Irritation of diaphragm due to any inflammation of liver or any other structures. Raised urea and creatinine can cause hiccups. In your case there is associated nasty sulphur/rotten egg burps means the food is remaining in stomach for a long time or there may be partial obstruction in the upper intestines. Hence I would advise you the following as you can go to ER only as per the history you have provided. Go to ER and give detailed history for the doctors to have proper clinical evaluation.

Get the investigations like ultrasonography, upper GI endoscopy, barium studies for esophagus stomach and small intestine. All these together will give a proper diagnosis and lead to an appropriate management. Try to get CICP asap to facilitate proper further diagnosis and management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
