What Causes Pus With Mucus In Stools After Taking Treatment For Ulcerative Colitis?
My son was diagnosed as having Ulcerative Colitis after colonoscopy. He took Mesacol 400. After one year or so he discontinued as there was no problem. Now when tested the stool test shows puss with mucus and blood is not ditected in it. But the himoglobin is 12.5. He says he is not having any pain or problem of frequent motions as used to be two years back. Kindly advise.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
The presence of pus with mucus in stools indicate inflammatory process in the intestine as a part of ulcerative colitis process flare-up or other intestine infection. In our clinic, I recommend:
- Dietary measures for preference to a bland diet - Plenty of liquids - Avoidance of spices, nonvegetarian, and oily food - Mesacol and other GI specific antibiotic as metronidazole or rifaximin as per the clinician choice - Lifestyle modifications in terms of regular exercises, avoidance of smoking if doing
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
