What Causes Pain In Left Side After Laparoscopic Surgery For Ectopic Pregnancy?

Yes. I unfortunately had an ectopic pregnancy left Fallopian tube.. when I was 6 weeks pregnant and had laparoscopic surgery and they also has to do a D and c.. Come to find out I had a blood clot as well by ectopic.. Was doing fine and was conservative with progression as far as activity. However, I am still having stabbing pain in left side and it only has gotten progressively worse..the surgery was over two months ago.. What are some possible scenarios with that.. I ve tried to play by the book but at a loss

Hello,

I would expect from the history of laparoscopy and the findings that you have described that the left-sided ectopic and blood clot was removed. Do you know what happened exactly - was the ectopic ruptured and was the whole of tube removed? Usually, with ectopic pregnancy, sometimes conservative treatment of injecting drugs into the ectopic sac is also done, in which case a follow up of blood tests is done where pregnancy hormone levels are measured every two days until it comes down to near normal level.

I would suggest first of all that you take painkillers such as paracetamol alone or paracetamol with Ibuprofen (if you are not asthmatic or with low platelets) or paracetamol with codeine. Please get a full blood count, CRP and serum beta HCG levels tested in blood. A routine urine examination may be useful if you are having symptoms related to the passing of urine. Discuss the symptoms and results with the gynecologist who operated. Possibilities are - persistent ectopic, adhesions within, ongoing inflammation or endometriosis due to seeding of cells of the womb lining into the abdomen.

A thorough review should help understand the nature of pain and get suitable treatment. Bear in mind that the most likely scenario is that wound healing of recent laparoscopy and removed ectopic would take time. Even though surface healing is fairly quick - inner strength and healing take time. Some soreness may be attributable to this and should settle over time.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sabina Hussain
