What Causes Irregular Periods And Constipation?

I might have appendicitis but I m not sure. I had my period last week for the first time in 6 months and I have been very heavy (not pregnant, just irregular). I noticed I have been constipated and haven t had many bowel movements for the past 3-4 days, maybe just one a day. I am not nauseous, I m not vomiting, I don t have a fever, I can pass gas just fine. I have slight discomfort on my right side, right where my underwear begins. But it s fine and not bad at all. It just worries me. My appetite is fine, maybe slightly less that normal, but that s usual during my periods.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Irregular periods can occur due to many causes like anemia, hormonal imbalance like PCOD, thyroid disorders, metabolic causes like diabetes, local causes like fibroid etc. Thyroid disorders can lead to irregular menstrual periods and also constipation sometimes. PCOD can present with irregular periods and if size of the ovaries are large, can lead to pain also. Appendicitis may lead to pain but may not directly cause irregular periods. If you want to be sure please consult your gynecologist once and go for ultrasound. Ultrasound helps in ruling out appendicitis or PCOD and finding the actual cause of your problem. Better to test for hemoglobin levels, blood sugar and thyroid profile also. According to all these you can take treatment.

Hope I have answered your question. I will be happy to answer any follow-up queries.

Take care.
