Hi! I m currently 28 weeks pregnant. I m scheduled to do a glucose test tomorrow. When I checked my sugar this morning, it was 174 but I just had coffee with half and half and 2 tsps of sugar. This is my 2nd pregnancy and I didn t develop gestational diabetes with my first one. I still exercise for 30 mins a day. What is the likelihood of me developing diabetes this time around? I m worried about the my blood test result this am....
Dear Madam, Welcome to HCM. I can understand your concern. The hormonal status is bit different during pregnancy and this results in higher insulin resistance and sometimes elevated sugar levels. Its very good that you exercise. Well the glucose test will exactly tell you where you stand. The treatment for gestational diabetes can be Diet and exercise if there is minimal elevation. during pregnancy the well being of the fetus is most important so to control sugars we use small doses of insulin as none of the oral drugs have proven safety during pregnancy. The good news is that even if you have gestational diabetes the insulin can be stopped immediately post delivery in most cases. So relax! Dont be tense... All the very best!!
