What Causes Excessive Sweating At Night?

For about four months I have been suffering with sweats, mostly at night but also at various times during the day. This morning I was fine and then about !0:00 AM I became so tired I couldn t stay awake. I laid down on the couch and fell asleep then woke up with a low grade fever of 100, chills and very painful bones, joints and general abdominal pain.

Hello,

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, can be a warning sign of thyroid problems, diabetes or infection. Excessive sweating is also more common in people who are overweight or out of shape.

The good news is that most cases of excessive sweating are harmless. There are a lot of causes that can cause excessive night sweats.

The main conditions and medicines that can cause your symptom are:

-obstructive sleep apnoea
– a condition that causes interrupted breathing during sleep
-medication like
– antidepressants and some other psychiatric drugs can sometimes cause night sweats as a side effect, as can aspirin and the steroid drug prednisolone
-alcohol abuse
-hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which is commonly associated with diabetes and taking insulin
-infections
tuberculosis, endocarditis (inflammation of the heart valves), osteomyelitis (a bone infection), abscesses and HIV/AIDS
-pheochromocytoma and carcinoid syndrome (tumors that cause the body to overproduce hormones)
-Hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid gland, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD).

As an endocrinologist, my advice for you is to do the diabetes screening test and the thyroid function test (TSH, free t3 and free T4).

Let me know your results and then we can discuss the cause that may be the culprit of your excessive sweating and if we find the cause, you can have the right treatment.
