Endocarditis

What is Endocarditis?

Endocarditis is an inflammation of the inner layer of the heart, the endocardium. It usually involves the heart valves (native or prosthetic valves). Other structures that may be involved include the interventricular septum, the chordae tendineae, the mural endocardium, or even the surfaces of intracardiac devices. Endocarditis is characterized by a prototypic lesion, the vegetation.

Hi, my brother has just had a 5 week stay in hospital after suffering from Endocarditis, he was on a life support machine for 3 weeks and died once but was fortunatly revivied, he then had heart surgery where they was able to remove 2 growths from his heart, and repair his valve, my question is, he has now been released from hospital, but, he has been given sodium fusidite, this medication is not on his discharge report but he has been given it, he has stopped taking it now because its not on his list, 4 days now, and to me, he doesnt look very well, he wont contact the doctor or hospital to get advise, does he need to continue to take this medication? many thanks a very worried brother

doctor1 MD

Hello,
Sodium fusidate is an antibiotic, and it need not be taken for long period. So if infection like fever , pus discharge from any site, and doctor has not mentioned it on discharge book, it may be a problem. Still once began, a course of it can be completed at least for 7 days.

In October I was diagnosed with pneumonia and strep throat (I had battled what I thought a cough or sinus infection for four wks before seeing a dr). After two rounds of antibiotics I didn't improve and they did blood culture which then I was diagnosed with endocarditis of the mital valve ( I have mitral valve prolapse disease which they say is probably why the bacteria has attacked that area). I have been on meds for this since mid November with bloodwork still showing infection / abnormal levels. I will think I am improving for a few days and then I start feeling more fatigue and I experience a lot of nausea, diahrrea, and some vomiting. My doctor has been conferring with an infectious disease dr since mid January, at which time upon his opinion, changed my antibiotics. I guess my question is how long does it take to get over this - they tell me it is difficult to treat since two areas of treatment - first killing the bacteria and then managing the affected mital valve. I would like your opinion please.

doctor1 MD

Hi. Thank you for writing to us.

Depending on the type of pneumonia, the duration of treatment is fixed. Also, pneumonia is sometimes very difficult to treat, and thus doctor's end up going from mild to moderate intensity antibiotics, and sometimes even from moderate to higher intensity...

My daughter is in a Hospital in Phoenix, AZ. She needs to start a methadone detox asap. They keep telling her she can, they gave her 1 dose last night and are going to send her to a nursing home tomorrow for a month of antibiotics to treat endocarditis. Can she start Methadone in the nursing home or does she have to be in treatment before she enters the nursing home. She already tried nursing home without anything to detox from the heroine and just left the last nursing home, which is what I m afraid will happen again. She is very serious about getting help. I have tried several Methodone treatment centers to s methadoneee if they will go to nursing home to administer methadone and they all say no. Any suggestions on what I can do, We are desparate.
