What Causes Difficulty In Hearing And Liquid Discharge?

hi doctor i have a middle ear infection. i have suffered from these for years and have been getting treatment for them however they always seem to come back worse. i suffered from clue ear when i was younger but dont think it is anything to do with that because it is only in the last few years. i went to the doctors a few weeks ago with it and then he told me to pop my ears and gave me some tablets which i took. he sais that my ear drum had been pushed in. it was fine for a little bit but had come back again. i can hardly hear out of my ear and it feels like liquid is trying to come out. i have a doctors appoinment booked for wednesday, however should i be seen earlier because i read on the internet that sometimes it can lead to perminent hearing damage. thankyou

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Retracted eardrum means the eustachian tube on the same is not properly functioning. There can be a problem in nose or sinuses as many a times the primary cause is somewhere but the symptoms are related at other sites. Hence it is important to have a proper and full ENT check up.
* Do not blow the nose as this may force the air but also nasal fluid into the middle ear that can cause problems of otitis media
* Oral course of decongestant, anti-inflammatory and steroids should help you the most
* Nasal decongestant drops
* CT scan of mastoids and sinuses will help further.
* Complete the courses of medications till cured well

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
