Pediatrician, Infectious Diseases 's  Response
Hi Allison, your daughter seems to be having either an EBV infection (infectious mononucleosis) or a Strep throat. Other possibilities which seem less likely are diphtheria and bacteria apart from strep.
I would advise you to get a throat swab done for RADT to see if strep bacteria is present. If the RADT is positive, start her on Amoxicillin for 10 days
If RADT is negative, she should get a throat C/S done, and an EBV VCA antigen (or a MonoSpot test) to check for mononucleosis.
For her symptomatic relief:
1. Warm saline gargles 5 times a day (very good relief with this)
2. Lozenges to suck on
3. Warm fluids like soups and porridge to nourish her if she cant take solid food
4. Paracetamol for the headache and fever
If the fever and white patches persist in spite of the above, I suggest you see a pediatrician to rule out rarer causes.

Hope she gets better soon.
