What Are The Side Effects Of Silver Sulfadiazine Cream?

I have some 3rd degree burns from being splattered with boiling soup on my arm. The largest one is about 3 inches by 1 inch. I received them 10 days ago. I didn t realize the severity of the burns and treated them myself for 4 days. Then I sought medical attention and was given an oral antiboitic for infection and a prescription for silver sulfadizene cream. I am changing the dressing 2 times a day and applying the silver sulfadiazene cream. I have read that this cream can have serious side effects and can also prolong the healing process. Is this true? Also, the doctor said she did not need to see me agian, but I don t know is I will eventually need a skin graft, when I can start using any other products such as calendula gel, aloe vera gel, vitamin e, etc.

Hi,

Silver sulfadiazine cream is commonly used to treat burns and prevent or treat infection. While it is generally considered safe and effective, like any medication, it can have potential side effects. Some possible side effects of silver sulfadiazine cream include:
* Skin reactions: It is possible to experience skin irritation, redness, itching, or a burning sensation at the application site. This is usually mild and temporary.
* Allergic reactions: Some individuals may be allergic to silver sulfadiazine. Allergic reactions can manifest as skin rash, hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, or dizziness. If you experience any of these symptoms, discontinue use and seek medical attention immediately.
* Blood disorders: In rare cases, silver sulfadiazine can affect the production of blood cells, leading to blood disorders. Signs of a blood disorder may include unexplained bruising or bleeding, persistent sore throat, or general weakness.
* Regarding the healing process and the use of other products, it's important to follow the guidance of your healthcare provider. They will be able to assess the severity of your burns and determine the appropriate treatment plan, including when and if alternative products can be incorporated. Depending on the extent of the burns, you may or may not require a skin graft. If you have concerns or questions about your treatment, it's best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. If you require a personalized response, kindly use the Ask A Doctor service and post a follow-up query.
