What Causes Itching On The Right Breast After A Lumpectomy?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Oct 2017
Question: Hi, I finished 30 radiation sessions after a lumpectomy for DCIS in my right breast. Three months later I am experiencing moderately severe itching around the site, off and on, irregardless of what I do. Area appears red, and seems to be "lumpy," even though I do my best to leave it alone and let it heal. I did try a recommended lotion (calendula) which seemed to help for a while. Will this itching ever go away and is it harmful to scratch it? (My skin is intact.) Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Hello. This usually fades away

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear. So post radiation itching usually goes away with time and it is harmless. Although it is annoying . You can apply calamine lotion three times a day and it will relieve you of itching. In severe cases, a short course of steroids helps but only after a clinical examination.
Thanks and regards
