In some parts of africa, removal of uvula is being practised as a ritual since long times. The definitive indication of removal of uvula is for obstructive sleep apnoea where uvula can obstruct airflow causing snoring.Studies have proven that uvula contains glands that produces thin saliva.Removal can be a cause of pharyngeal dryness.Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy after uvula removal can lead to velopharyngeal insufficiency(change in voice causing a nasal tone).Currently no vaccine has been introduced to prevent throat infections.I dont recommend removal of uvula in your child as it is needed for swallowing and speech function.
