Spontaneous onset of swelling &
pain in the ankle suggests an INFLAMMATORY cause and not
sprain.
A detailed clinical examination and appropriate investigations are needed to establish the diagnosis.
In the meantime, the following measures will help to some extent
* Rest to the inflammed part and avoid activities which causes pain
* Ice packing of the inflammed area once in 2-3 hours to alleviate the pain
* Elevation of the foot end to resolve the oedema
* Active toe movements
* Elastic compression bandage around the swollen area
* Over the counter
analgesic medications like
Advil or
Aleve will decrease the pain and inflammation.
I suggest you to consult an orthopedic surgeon for further evaluation and managment.
