Suggest Treatment For Violent Seizures

Hello Doctor,
My Dad has been on 500mg X 2 dosage for the past 3 years. He has however been changing his dosage intermittently on his own only to be corrected by the family members with the help of doctors. The drug was started by his doctor after looking at his Color Doppler and CT following a very violent seizure. There was a tiny clot found. Since then he has had only one violent seizure, but often gets smaller episodes of forgetfullness of duration 2-3 minutes when he loses complete context of his surroundings and looks puzzled. The help that I require is:
1. on the side effects that may be caused
2. how to subside/overcome those side effects.
3. Natural diet that can help him to build resistance to side effects.
4. Is there a way of doing away with medication with the help of a one-time treatment?

I would always remain indebted to you for this help.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Unfortunately, it looks like you've provided a good deal of other information to someone else in this forum and were expecting the same doctor to continue with your particular question. However, I have no information on what medication you're talking about or the actual condition being treated.

Medications that come in 500 mg and are given twice daily are many but perhaps you're talking about Keppra? And maybe you're referring to a seizure disorder diagnosed in your father? Side effects of what we call AED's (antiepileptic drugs) range from mild to severe and definitely can involve cognition (that is memory, thought processing, etc.). There would be no known dietary regimen to prevent side effects of the medication that is specific to the drug at hand due to its chemical properties and how your father's metabolism chooses to react to it. No amount of dietary supplementation or improvement will alter those effects (at least none that have ever been studied or published. Interesting thought though to be sure).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dariush Saghafi
