Hi,

Yes, weight gain is a known side effect of Epilim (also known as sodium valproate), which is an anticonvulsant medication used to treat epilepsy. The mechanism by which Epilim causes weight gain is not fully understood, but it is thought to be related to the medication's effect on metabolism and appetite.

In addition to weight gain, other potential side effects of Epilim include nausea, vomiting, hair loss, tremors, drowsiness, and liver problems. It is important to work closely with your doctor to monitor for any potential side effects of the medication and adjust the dose as necessary.

Regarding your gum problem, it is unclear if this is related to your use of Epilim or if there are other factors involved. It may be helpful to consult with a dental specialist to determine the cause of your gum issues and explore possible treatments.

If you are planning to try for a baby, it is important to discuss your medication regimen with your doctor, as certain medications used to treat epilepsy can have potential risks for pregnancy. Your doctor may recommend adjusting your medication or monitoring you more closely during pregnancy to ensure the safety of both you and your baby.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
