Suggest Treatment For Tachycardia

I have been diagnosed with tachycardia, determined after wearing a heart monitor holster for 24hours - average heart rate being 100 bpm. Dr prescribe beta blocker inderal 40 mg. I am not keen to take meds after reading about side affects. I am a 35 year old woman , weight 72kg, height 163. I have no serious medical conditions.

Hello!

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that betablockers are a good treatment choice to help prevent cardiac arrhythmia.

Anyway, I would like to directly review your Holter report for a more professional opinion.

If you do not tolerate this drug, I would suggest switching to a calcium channel blocker.

But, you should know that all drugs may lead to adverse effects and the decision is based on the balance between benefits and adverse effects.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

Cardiologist Dr. Ilir Sharka's  Response
Hi,

I would explain that tachycardia could be related to different possible causes: chronic anemia, electrolyte imbalance, thyroid gland dysfunction, etc.

Coming to this point, I would recommend consulting with your attending physician and performing some other tests:
- a cardiac ultrasound
- complete blood count for anemia
- blood electrolytes for electrolyte imbalance
- thyroid hormone levels for thyroid gland dysfunction.

Starting low dose of betablockers may be needed, if all the above tests result normal. In such case, you can start low dose of Inderal increase slowly, based on your own tolerance.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
