Suggest Treatment For Swollen Throat And Fever In Kid

9 year old daughter has had fever for 4 days now and her throat is swollen and hurts her to swallow. She tested negative for strep but they gave her Amox-clav 400mg anyways because it might be tonsillitis. She has taken this since Friday night...it is now Sunday afternoon. She threw up a couple times but hasn t since Friday morning. She is also having headaches. She seems tired a lot and doesn t want to eat. Is it normal for her to be sick for this long?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your 9 year old daughter having fever and painful swallowing, had vomiting in initial period, started on Amoxiclav for strep throat as per the Doctor, now having headache, tired and does not want to eat.
- She is on a great antibiotic, please continue in proper dose and duration.
- Add on a good anti-inflammatory with painkiller property. This will help with headache and constitutional symptoms.
- Povidone iodine gargles.
- Plenty of oral fluids to maintain hydration and electrolyte balance which is of importance.
- Also get necessary blood tests like CBC, kidney and liver functions.
- Throat swab tests.
- Change over to another antibiotic if your Doctor suggests so.
- Multivitamins and minerals.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
