Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat

Hi, I have had a severe sore throat since Wednesday. Very painful to swallow saliva, painful glands in neck. Also have flu symptoms; ache, headache, hot and cold but NO cold symptoms; nose is not running etc. Assuming it s viral and will have to ride it out. Saw GP on Friday about something else and she said from looking at throat is was probably viral. I thought I would start feeling better by now but still feel awful, throat has never been this painful, has kept me awake 2 hours every night since Thursday. I don t have tonsils. Is it normal for viral illness to last this long and show no improvement? Thanks very much.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

As pre the history this looks to be a bacterial infection as there is no cold or running nose. I would advise you the following in such a situation. First of all, get your blood tests done to see for White cell count and if increased then you surely need an antibiotic, Metronidazole for antibacterial coverage. Throat swab for gram staining, culture and sensitivity. Symptomatic treatment with painkiller with anti-inflammatory properties like Ibuprofen in proper doses and duration. Povidone Iodine gargles. Continue the treatment till cured. If the glands persist to remain same or grow then get an ultrasound and FNAC for further diagnosis and management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
