Suggest Treatment For Mild Active Colitis

My 2yr old suffers from mild active colitis. She had an endoscopy last year october which showed contact bleeding in the colon. She has been put on a dairy free diet and sulphasalizine for at least 6 months. Her syptoms had been improving, but in the past 3/4 days the problem has flaired up again and she is passing a lot of blood in her stool. What do you advise?

Hi,

Since your child is only 2 years old it is of utmost importance to know the exact diagnosis that is causing colitis.
You have not posted the histopathology report of the colonic biopsy which can tell whether there is any specific cause o the colitis is non-specific.
If the cause is specific the treatment may be easy and effective.
It is good that dairy products have been stopped. Do not start.
Also observe which of the other foods and beverages is exacerbating the symptoms and stop these altogether.
If the biopsy has not been done it is needed to get it done asap.
Te medications to be continued as per the Doctors advise.
Get three stool tests on consecutive days.
Also get CBC and other tests to see whether the bleeding colon has caused any anemia.
Iron, Vitamins and mineral supplements is needs in any case of colitis.
Get the blood Vitamin D levels and supplement if needed.

Take care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
