I have vitiligo . the only normal skin pigment I have left is on both cheeks on my face . I want to get rid of it permanently . There has to be something available to help me ! I have been to a dermatologist in both Wheeling , WV and in Pittsburgh , PA . The one in Wheeling did several Fraxal ( ??) lasure treatments and then said he was done because the results weren t worth doing more . The one in Pittsburgh gave much false hope That was in the middle of March as of yet I STILL have not been given the prescriptions she recommended . They were basically for skin cancer , not approved by the FDA and both medicare and my insurance refused to pay for those reasons . today I got a call saying since they can t get them to approve the drugs good bye your on your own unless you pay for them yourself otherwise , we re done with you . the drugs were close to $300.00 with no guarantee of helping
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Vitiligo is a skin condition in which there is loss of pigmentation in patches in different areas of body thereby forming white patches on skin.. It occurs due to damage to the melanocytes in certain areas of body which are pigment producing cells producing Melanin and provides colour to skin.. Consult a Dermatologist and get evaluated and he can do a thorough clinical evaluation and also advise investigations like biopsy from the depigmented areas.. You can be advised to apply steroid ointments over the depigmented areas of skin.. It should be done for not more that 2 months and that too under the supervision of the dermatologist as steroids can cause certain side effects.. You can also be advised spot Oxsoralen therapy.. PUVA photochemotherapy can also be benificial.. In case of small areas skin grafting can also be advised if other mechanisms does not help..
