Smacked Lower Back, Bruise Developed, Hurts By Touch. Heeling Time?

During the end of my gym class, I ran up the wall and gripped the railing that connects the basketball hoop to the wall. When I fell, I made sure to do a breakfall (roll) as soon as I hit the ground. But I messed up, and my lower back smacked the floor pretty hard ( still walked it off like a boss XD jk). Ever since then my lower back has developed this sort of bump/bruise and every time I touch it it hurts. It has been a week and it still hasn't healed. Everytime I do a roll whether it's clean or sloppy, the lower part of my back begins to hurt. I've decided to hold off on the rolls until it heals, but I'm not sure if it's a bruise or what. What should I do ? \

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef , a general surgeon answering your query.

Possibly because of the hard hit, you have developed a hematoma ( collection of blood ) along with the bruise which will take at least 3-4 weeks to heal if you give it proper rest. It might take longer or may become chronic, if you do not give it proper rest, and continue over stretching it. Apart from rest, you may have to take some anti inflammatory drug along with some serrato-peptidase either in combination or separately. Also a local anti inflammatory gel may also give you relief. You can approach the physiotherapy department of the near by hospital in case of need.

If all of the above is also not relieving you of your symptoms, or it they increase, then you may have to contact an orthopaedic surgeon for clinical examination followed by further investigations and management.

I hope these information will help you in relieving your symptoms. Thanks for choosing healthcaremagic forum for your health query. Good luck.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on your description, I suspect that you might have suffered a soft tissue contusion with muscle strain.

This is self limiting and resolves spontaneously within 3 weeks (maximum).

Please follow the below mentioned recommendations -

- It is important to give rest to the injured muscles so as to provide some time for it to heal.
- avoid any activity that produces pain
- Before activities, gentle heating can help loosen the muscle. As a general rule of thumb, remember to heat before an activity and ice afterwards.
- Oral anti-inflammatory medications (such as Aleve or Motrin) can help relieve symptoms of pain and also calm the inflammation.
- Gentle massaging of the painful area with a pain killer cream will reduce the pain

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
