Should I Change My Doctor Who Treats Me For Hypothyroidsm After Which I Have Troubled Sleep?

I have been treated for hypothyroidism for years. I'm 54 years old and went to a new gyn doctor for excessive bleeding. He wanted to check my thyroid counts and I find out I'm "hyperthyroid now and as I've check my past blood count reports, it appears I have been from 5/12 if not 2011. I'm having trouble sleeping, my heart is racing at night. I'm confused if I should find a new doctor to treat my thyroid and receive a 2nd opinion or see the old one and see how he explains over medicating me. I'm also concerned if I will have complications because of this.

Hello and welcome to HCM,
In case of hypothyroidism, the thyroid hormones are low.
Replacement with thyroid hormones is required to make for the deficit.
However, sometimes the thyroid hormones increase and start producing effects of hyperthyroidism.
The symptoms that you have mentioned- racing heart, difficulty in sleeping and menstrual irregularities are seen in hyperthyroidism.
You need to get your fresh thyroid function tests done.
In case there are any abnormalities in the thyroid function tests, you will need to consult your doctor to change in dosage of the drug that you are taking.
It is not essential to change your doctor but if you are not satisfied, you can do so.
The menstrual irregularities should be corrected once the thyroid hormone profile is corrected.
However, if the irregularities still persist you mat need to consult your gynecologist to find out the cause of menstrual irregularities.

Thanks and take care
