On Tegretol, Levetiracetam. Feeling Tired. Got Cirrhosis Of The Liver. Blood Test For Liver Were Normal. Side Effects?
Hi, I am Dorothy Stewart in New Zealand, I have been on Tegretol 200mg morning and 400SR night for about 10 years. 2 years ago I was put on Levetiracetam 250mg 3 in morning and 3 at night. I was feeling tired and then it got worse and I have now got a Cirrhosis of the liver. Before starting the Levetiracetam my blood test for liver were normal. I'm awaiting a biopsy and MRI scan for my liver - they say it won't show what caused it. There is controversy as to whether Levetiracetam causes this I don't drink or smoke anything. I have cut it down to 2 levetiracetam in morning and 3 nite, 2 months ago -- no seizures. I had a Left Temporal Labotamy - but it was a stuff up and my sezures became worse- at nite time and Grand mals. Thank you so much for your help

You have undergone Left Temporal Lobotomy and have GTCS. You are currently taking Carbamazepine 600 mg per day and 1500 mg Levetiraxetam per day. You have deranged liver tests and have developed cirrhosis of liver. Although both of drugs are known to cause liver dysfunction but frank cirrhosis is rare. Carbamazepine is also known to cause liver damage. As you have mentioned that before starting the doses you were having normal functions. I would recommend you to take opinion of your doctor about the doses of medicines and any change in medicines if required.
