Neck Pain. Deep Tissue Scan Suggested. Family History Of Thyroid Cancer. Thyroid Test Required?
Hi, My neck hurts a lot lately. but it s not like a sore throat feeling its more of the muscles connecting my neck hurt. It hurts when i swallow and breathe and laugh and i get a kind of numbness/ache a lot. i went to the doctor and they said i should get a thyroid work up and a deep tissue scan because i have a family history of thyroid cancer . i m out of town at the moment but the symptoms are getting worse. should i try and get that done here? or should i wait?

Thanks for your questions. You can get your thyroid function tested as you have family history of thyroid cancer. US of the thyroid can also be done as you have family history of thyroid cancer. What type of thyroid cancer and how close were your relative ( first degree, second degree relative) with thyroid cancer.
Regarding your neck pain, it is very unlikely for thyroid cancer to present with neck pain unless it is a very aggressive form of caner. If you are suffering for an anterior neck pain you could have a condition called thyroiditis: painful thyroiditis. This could be secondary to any viral infection. It is usually self limited and responds well to anti inflammatory drugs. Blood test for thyroid function could be either be normal or shows hyperfunctoning thyroid gland. Please discuss with your doctor regarding the same.
