Is High Heart Rate A Cause Of Worry?

i am a healthy 44 year old who exercises most days - 3-5k runs or tennis. sometimes when i go to bed and lie down, my heart rate speeds up from a typical 60 bpm to 100-130 and even 140. it is hard to get to sleep. i have to sit and wait for it to slow again. i get a tense uncomfortable feeling in my neck. is there anything wrong? i am not stressed and smoke/drink now and again, but the heart rate can be high even when i dont have a drink etc. i never drink caffeine or sugary drinks before bed either. i am a healthy weight.

Hello and thank you for using HCM.
I carefully read you question and I understand your concern.I will try to explain you something.

There are different reasons that might cause increased heart beats. Physical or emotional stress, caffeine products might cause increased heart frequency so its mandatory to avoid them. But as you explain, you don't use them in an excessive way.

Also, there are different pathology's like anemia, thyroid gland problems like hyperthyroidism that might be the cause of fast heart beats.

When you experience a high frequency, it might be normal to feel palpitation or uncomfortable feeling in your neck or a chest discomfort.

If these frequencies are interfering in your normal daily live, If I was your treating doctor I will recommend some simple examinations.

I will recommend an electrocardiogram, a cardiac echo-cardiography and of course a rhythm holter monitoring for 24 h. This is necessary to have a full view of your mean frequencies during day and night

After these, a full blood check up to exclude anemia or thyroid problems with thyroid hormone levels

Doing this examinations helps us understand if it is necessary to treat this high frequencies or not.

Hope I was helpful. Wish you good health.
Best regards.
