Is Glycomet The Right Medication For Irregular Periods With History Of Having PCOD And Hypothyroid

Hello Doctor, I was diagnosed with PCOD and after hormonal check up was found to be suffering from hypothyroid for the past few years. I am taking eltroxin 100mg for the same and the TSH levels are normal as of now. Recently I faced problems with irregular periods, i didn t get periods for 2 mnths and later when i got the periods there was only spotting. Now the doctor has prescribed me regestrone tablet and glycomet 500. I am concerned about taking glycomet as i belived it is a a medicine for diabetic patients and my blood sugar level was found to be normal. Please advice if i do take glycomate for the prescribed two months will it effect with my blood sugar levels in anyway. Thanks and Regards, Viji

Hello Viji
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
PCOS is a condition characterized by baseline hormonal imbalance.
In this condition, the cause is unknown.
The ovaries get studded with multiple small cyst like follicles.
None of them gets matured every month, hence, ovulation is erratic and periods are irregular.
Please remain sexually active around the time of ovulation to ensure pregnancy.
The basic problem in PCOS is also one of underlying insulin resistance.
Glycomet or Metformin is given for that.
IT corrects the underlying metabolic imbalance that is always present in patients with PCOS.
It is not to be prescribed only for lowering your blood sugar levels, it is given to almost every PCOS patient for regulating the cycles and preventing metabolic complications.
Continue taking Eltroxin also.
Aim to maintain ideal body weight, as even a 5 % loss of weight also will lead to regulation of cycles.
In addition, please have a formal OGTT ( oral glucose tolerance test ) to diagnose glucose intolerance in PCOS, just fasting or random blood sugar levels will not be sufficient.
All the best.
Take care.
