How To Treat For Tear Below The Urethra Leading To Vagina?

I am 56 and I noticed that I often tear just below the urethra on the smooth patch of skin leading to the vagina. I have already gone through menopause about 8 years ago. I wondered if there is something that I can do. I noticed that during that time I am a bit dry there also.

Hi,

During menopause due to the deficiency of the estrogen hormone some amount of dryness is expected at external genitalia which can lead to minor tears. The possible steps that can help you are:
- For local hygiene, try to avoid soaps and use a vaginal wash with PH 3.5 to 4.5, which can help in maintaining the healthy vaginal epithelium.
- Vaginal gel along with analgesic effect can help in decreasing the dryness and pain.
- With your doctor's advice, you can go for estrogen cream that can help to maintain the moisture at the level of vaginal epithelium and external genitalia, which will decrease the occurrence of tears.

If you are doctor suggests, you can go for hormone replacement therapy also if the problem is severe.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sree Gouri S. R., OBGYN
