As far as diet and lifestyle modification is concerned you need to begin with changing your dietary habits and lifestyle.
If you smoke or drink alcohol, try to give up
smoking as it is bad for your heart health. Avoid drinking on a daily basis as it will increase your triglycerides. If you drink occasionally, then limit intake to not more than 2 drinks in a day.
If you are a non-vegetarian, avoid fatty meats, organ meats which have alot of
cholesterol.
Choose lean cuts of meat, skinless chicken and fish which is good for your heart. You can have boiled eggwhites but avoid its yolk.
Eat fresh fruits and vegetables as raw salads. Avoid oily and rich gravies and curries, fried foods, junk foods, processed foods, bakery items and other fat rich foods like butter, clarified butter, margarine. Use refined vegetable oil for cooking such as olive oil, canola oil, rice bran oil etc. and limit its use to not more than 3-4 tsp in a day per person.
Use low fat cooking methods: boiling, steaming, grilling, stir frying and stewing.
Have foods such as beans like
kidney beans, chickpeas, whole bengal gram, whole pulses, whole grain cereals like oats and oat bran which lower cholesterol levels. Avoid refined starches and sugar as much as possible as they increase triglycerides too like white polished rice or basmati rice, white bread, potatoes, sugar and sweetened drinks, sweets and savouries made out of white flour or maida and deep fried.
Limit intake of nuts and dried fruits due to their high fat content.
Try to stay physically active. Do some brisk walk for 30 minutes. Make sure you are regular and limit sedentary activities like watching TV, Computer use and sitting for long hours.
