How To Get Rid Of Heartburn From Severe Coughing?

I ve been having an excruciating cough for the past two weeks that forces me to the point of dry heaving, the local doctor gave me an antibiotic but thought it was just a cold . I take the last pill of the antibiotic today, but I seem to be getting worse on a daily basis. Should I go to the ER? I have heartburn from coughing so much, and my abdomen is sore.

Hi,

The cause can be coughing causing GERD that is gastroesophageal reflux or the other way, GERD causing LRPD that laryngo-pharyngeal reflux disease irritating pharynx and larynx giving severe coughing. Hence antibiotic would not work. The symptomatic treatment is as follows:
* Stop antibiotic if there is no fever or constitutional symptoms or WBC is raised
* Cough syrup to suppress coughing
* PPI like Omeprazole
* Domperidone to tighten the lower esophageal sphincter
* Steam inhalation
* Any other medicines as would be advised by your doctor
If there is not much relief then go for investigations like X-ray of chest, Upper GI Endoscopy and get treated accordingly and additionally.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
