History Of Broken Tibia. Using Walker. Have Pain When Walking. How To Get Stronger?

I stepped in a deep hole and broke my tibia about 4 or 5 inches above the ankle on June 11, 2013. I thought I would be back to work by Sept. 3 at the latest. ( I assist in a kindergarten class and do a lot of walking) But here I am crying at home because I still am using a walker or cane and sometimes a boot so now I am trying to go back by Sept 18. I can take 10 to 20 steps slowly then I have a toothache like pain for about 20 min after the attempt to walk a little. How can I get it strong enought by the 18th? My email is YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
It seems that you might have some tissue injury and un displaced fracture of tibia causing this problem.
But as there is sharp injury some damage to tibia bone might cause periosteum injury may lead to osteomyelitis.
go for x ray and rule out any infection to bone.
Ok and take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Generally, the lower limb fractures takes around 3-4 months to unite based on the fracture pattern.

Xrays of the fractured area will show up the status of bony union. Presence of pain on weight bearing or tenderness over the fracture site indicates that the fracture has not united fully so as to allow you to walk comfortably. So, you have to wait for some more time till the fracture attains a solid union.

The simplest way of assessing the progress of fracture union is by having serial xrays of the fracture at monthly intervals.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
