Have Regular Periods. Current Periods Is Little Late, Have Brown Discharge. No Pre-menstrual Symptoms. No Sex. Suggestions?

Hi Dr Grief,

I am a 45 year old woman with normally regular periods. My period before last came a week early, the next one came the expected number of days after that one, and my current period is now 5 days late, I just had a small amount of brown discharge on my due date. I'm not experiencing any pre-menstrual symptoms. Pregnancy is not a factor, as my husband is abroad working abroad and I have not been sexually active since before my last period. Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Shireen

Hi,

Do not worry. Such abnormal periods are common for women at your age (45 years) as you are entering the menopause (and experiencing pre-menopause symptoms).

You might have hot flashes (or they will come by time) or feeling depressed or other humor oscillations. That is normal.

You are having some brown discharge on your due date which means your periods are appearing like that for this time. Perhaps, later would come blood flow or it would appear the next due date.

If you are experiencing other symptoms like burning of urine or rash in your vagina, you can do a urine analysis, urine culture and vaginal swab exam to exclude infection problems.

I would also suggest to do regular Pap tests annually or according to your doctor's advice as this age changes are related to other problems of uterus neck.

Hope it helped!
