Have Ulcerative Colitis. On Asacol. Feeling Flare Up Is Happening. Remedy?
I'm 22, have ulcerative colitis and have been on Asacol for over a year. Also been on remicade cor about 4 or 5 mnths. A few months ago I had a really bad flare up and was on the highest dosage of prednisone and was slowly weaned of after like 2 months with no other advice other than that I just had to ride it through. Today I feel like a flare up is happening again, but I don't want to go through the prednisone and all the pain again. What other options do I have??
The main problem with Ulcerative Colitis is that we really dont know what exactly is causing it. We do know that this is autoimmune disease so all we can do is to affect immune system. There is a plenty of medicines which can temporary stop the immune system so the intestine inflammation can go away. But this wont treat your disease. It only helps with flare ups. The only and permanent solution is total large intestine removal (as this disease affects only large intestine). This is quite serious surgery however if done well, can set your free from symptoms for the res of your life. You may discuss it with general surgeon.
Hope this will help. Regards.
