Got In An Accident And Got Hit My Calf, Hip. Have Light Colored Bruise. Have Pain, Can't Walk. Fracture?

hi, last night I was in the back seat of my moms big van when she almost hit a deer. she was going around 70mph, slammed on the breaks and I went flying out of my seat into the center counsel banging the inside of my calf and my right hip (I didn't have my seat belt on). there's a small light colored bruise on my calf and it hurts when I walk but it's not excruciating pain to the point where I can't walk. could I have fractured my leg? It hurts to touch it but I'm not sure if that's from the small amount of bruising or if I could have fractured it.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us

It might be soft tissue injury or fracture.

Without X-ray, it is difficult to differentiate a fracture from others. I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance.

In the interim,apply ice packs to the affected area,anti-inflammatory drug like motrin to reduce pain and inflammation. Avoid putting weight and rest well.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

If you are able to walk bearing full weight on the leg, then a fracture is unlikely.

Based on the description, I suspect that you could have suffered a soft tissue Hematoma. This usually resolves spontaneously with the following measures -

* Rest to the injured part and don’t involve in activities which puts additional strain on the injured tissues.
* Ice packing should be applied for about 20 minutes once in every 2 hours.
* Use elastic compression bandage around the swollen area
* Elevation of the limb
* Analgesic & anti inflammatory medications as needed

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
