Extremely Heavy, Irregular Periods Due To Multiple Follicles. Is Pregnancy Possible?

I have very irregular periods. I might miss my periods for three months and when they come the fourth month, they are extremely heavy. My ultrasound read many follicles. The gynae put me on oral contraceptives for 3 months, my periods went back to normal for 5 months but now they are back to being irregular although at the end of every month, i have signs that my periods are almost coming, like tender breasts. Please help me understand. Will i be able to get a baby? I am 30 years old.

Hello
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
Follicles are numerous around both ovaries and one of them mature call as dominant follicle . This dominant follicle rupture and release ovum .
In my opinion multiple follicle means cysts multiple ( assuming in your case).
Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease is one of the most important reason develop irregular bleeding , dysfunctional uterine bleeding , amenorrhea ( as in your case ).
Cysts are often caused by hormone changes.
Using birth control pills can sometimes help regulate hormone levels so that cysts can be taken care of.
As far as concerned about conception , you can get pregnancy but it depends upon maturation of dominant follicle and release of ovum.
So get in complete follicles study .
Consult an infertility specialist and get hsi opinion.
Good luck.

Hello ma'am and welcome.

Based on the provided information I am suspecting a hormonal imbalance caused by polycystic ovarian syndrome and so I would advise an ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis or a transvaginal ultrasound the confirm the same. A blood investigation to check on hormone levels would also be beneficial.

Once the diagnosis is made, and treatment initiated accordingly, your cycles should regularize. As for conception, of course it is possible, but before you start trying to conceive we will have to regularize your periods. And we will also initiate a different treatment regimen once it is safe for you to start trying to conceive. So keep your doctor informed.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
