Does Irregular Periods Indicate Menopause?

I did not have a period from August 13th thru the first of October, then began bleeding and did not stop until November 14th. I then began bleeding again on November 22nd, and have yet to stop. I am 44 years old. Could this be the start of menopause?

Hi.
I've gone through your query and I can understand your anxiety.

Usually menopause is attained between 45- 55 years of age, average being 47years. Your history of Irregular bleeding + Age shows menopausal age setting in. So bleeding now needed to examined by a gynaecologist to rule out the underlying disease if any.

Many conditions like  tissue growth, cancer, thinning & thickening of vaginal lining, medications etc can result in such breakthrough bleeding. I advice you to,
-to do Transvaginal USG & endometrial biopsy at the earliest for further evaluation
- PAP smear & breast examination.
- Antispasmodics to get relieved of cramps
- calcium & vitamin supplements
-Nutritious diet rich in proteins.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Take care.

Regards,
Dr. Yogapriya V, General and family physician.
