Does Eating Bacon And Not Taking Fish Oil Increase The Levels Of Cholesterol And Triglycerides?

Hi, I ve always had elevated cholesterol/ triglycerides levels but control them pretty well. I m allergic to statins, tried them all, Niacin too. Have been taking Zetia for some time & been watching my eating habits. The following is 2 lipid blood test results, one from my last test 3/1/13 prior to annual physical & test just taken prior to my upcoming annual physical. First number is last year s test, 2nd number is this year s test. Triglycerides 140/669--HDL 36/32--LDL 135/240--Cholesterol total 199/272--ratio 5.5/8.5 I m on an absolutely pre-diabetic low-carb, low sugar eating program for like 5 years. The absolute only changes in my food/drink lifestyle between the 2 test has been I eat like bacon/eggs 3-4 times a week & have discontinued taking fish oil due to some bad reports. Ok, finally ha, here s the question Doctor. Do you think these 2 changes could possibly effect my counts this much, especially Triglycerides, total cholesterol & ratio? By the way I m a 73 year old male. Thanks so much in advance for giving me some of your very valuable time. Darryl Hubbard

Hello Darryl. Unfortunately I am sorry to say that the reports that you have shared show an extremely poor lipid profile. And this puts you under a risk of cardiovascular event. If you have tried statins and you are allergic then you should try other anti lipid medication mainly fibrates, or bile acid sequestrants which your consulting cardiologist will be able to prescribe you seeing your body parameters. Other than these drugs I would strongly advise you to try a different life style. If there were patient in my clinic with these reports I would ask him to adopt a suitable twice a week exercise regime, avoiding oily stuff, avoiding bacon, avoiding milk products(for triglycerides) and minimal alcohol consumption (for hdl).Having eggs 2-3 times a week is acceptable if egg whites are consumed. I would ask you to avoid yolk. I know these changes may be difficult at times but we are facing an impending danger if this issue is not resolved.
